I'm having trouble sewing webbing to webbing, velcro to webbing. The
machine
is a Brother PX-330 ('domestic' duty machine with a range of stitches).
The
needles are 'Organ' brand and I have no idea whether they're decent
quality.
The thread is either Gutterman or Coats extra strong, and I've tried
needle
sizes 90, 100, 110. The needles bend/break even if they're brand new. The
webbing is 25mm polyester stuff.
The two main problems I'm having are bent/broken needles and lots of
thread
looping on the underside. Sometimes, the machine stalls, or can't get
started until I press the throttle(?) rather more than I feel I should,
resulting in it running very fast (which I find awkward because I'm only
doing short lengths of 1-2 inches).
I would say that the smaller size of needle was a little more successful.
I
assume that this is because the webbing is a tight, thick weave and that
the
larger needles have trouble spreading the fibres. (That said, I've had
similar issues sewing velcro to 'normal' materials like velvet.) Whatever
needles size I use, I still have trouble with the thread looping
underneath
and incerasing the upper tension doesn't seem to have helped much. I've
also
tried playing with the stitch length (medium to long), but it hasn't made
much difference.
Basically, the stitching's a mess (although, when I actually get a run of
stitching, it seems quite strong in any case), and the difficulty with
feed
and speed makes it hard to keep things under control (reverse feed is
especially unreliable).
Any suggestions? Should I try an even smaller needle? Different brand of
needle? Special needle? Is the thread too thick? Can I adjust my machine
to
work better, or is it just too feeble?
Thanks in advance!
