I was a latecomer to the use of plate joinery, and the upshot of it is
that,
a few years back, one of the folks who was personally instrumental in
convincing me of their worth was ...  none other than Tom Watson himself.
:)

I had been using splines only to reinforce miter joints and Tom convinced
me
that biscuits were quite acceptable for the task. I've been thankful for
that advice every since.

I'm sure it's in the archives somewhere.
