They are not absolutely necessary. They are there to push the water out
away from the boat and keep it from possibly climbing up the side of
the boat and getting inside. They may also help the boat to turn, but
that's not really why they're there. I originally had mine the full
length of the boat, but later removed all but about 18" at the rear
****tion of the boat.  Doug
