I would think the explanation has to do with using the center of gravity to

the advantage of the pilot. In short, its probably a function of how well 
you can balance the plane ........ similar to the way you can put a broom 
stick on your fingertip and balance it vertically. Of course, I could be 
totally full of horse pucky, too. Its an interesting question. thanks for
