    We do the same thing, tho' be bought a tube of 0.039" piano wire from 
K&S.  They are about 36" long per piece, which works rather nicely.

    Done it, didn't like it.  :-)  What I did was use a lot of masking
tape 
wrapped around the drill bit, but it still wanted to go through.  A drill 
set screw (or whatever they are called) would be better.
    What I do these days is just pull the switch.  It's a pain having to 
unspike and respike the switch, but it's a lot safer over all.
