Found an answer in the archives of alt.sewing. The burned out
component is just a capacitor. It is connected across the contacts to
prevent the little sparks when the power is connected. This is just to
prevent interference with other electrical items. The problem is that
when it burns out it conducts electricity and so the machine starts
running. The solution is to just cut the component out! Working fine
again. Although I think it would be nice if these components had an
earth...
